Face off at the start of the second period

Last night I was at the Glens Falls Civic Center again for an Adirondack Phantoms hockey game. This was game #228 of the AHL season, the third meeting this season between Bridgeport and Adirondack. So far in the earlier two games, Adirondack has prevailed in both games.

As soon as the puck dropped, ADK #16 Patrick Maroon and BRI #27 Matt Martin dropped their gloves and gave it some one-two. It was a good battle, with the linesmen stepping in after the fight had gone on for a while.

ADK put a score on the board first, at 4:55 of the second period. #10 David Laliberte put the puck into the net on the power play, with #18 Jared Ross and #26 Sean Curry on the helpers.

Just before the close of the second session, BRI tied the score with a goal from #15 Greg Moore.

The third period started on an uneasy note for ADK with a couple of bad penalties. #3 Joey Mormina was called for delay of game at 2:34, and then #16 Maroon had to take a seat when the bench was called for too many men at 3:50. During the first of these, BRI put the go ahead goal on the board, but ADK fought right back and got a great short-handed goal on a play by #9 Stefan Legein at the 4:32 mark of the final session.

This is how regulation ended, with the guys going to a session of free hockey (4-on-4 overtime). After 5-minutes of quick pace skating, neither team was able to bag the game winner, and we went to the shoot out.

ADK #3 Joey Mormina was denied in the first round, but BRI #23 Trevor Smith nailed their first shot. 0-1 BRI. There was only two more shots converted, both by ADK. The first was in the fourth round by #36 Krys Kolanos, and the winner in the seventh round by #16 Patrick Maroon. The final shot of the contest was BRI #9 Justin DiBenedetto who’s shot was stopped with the glove by #35 Nic Riopel.

The three stars of the game:

  1. ADK #35 Nic Riopel – Win, saved 25 of 27
  2. ADK #9 Stefan Legein – Game tying goal, 6 shots, +1
  3. BRI #33 Scott Munroe – saved 49 of 51

All in all a good game, and much better than Friday’s 5-0 loss to the Binghamton Senators. Well played lads!
